Concept review: Dynamite Roasting Co.

Dynamite Roasting Co.

For Andy and Patrick

Concepts by Start Right, not live. Made with your own photos, products and prices.

Your homepage,
three ways

Hi Andy and Patrick,

I'm Will Mosley. I run Start Right in Hendersonville and work with Asheville-area product businesses. I spent some time with dynamiteroasting.com and sketched three ways your homepage could work, each built around a different side of Dynamite.

Every photo, product, price and line of yours here comes from your own site as it is today, checked again on November 2. Your bag photography, your All-Star portraits and your own words did most of the work. Nothing on your site was touched.

Have a look, then just reply with A, B or C.

  • The first screen has no words or button

Your slider shows three photo collages with no headline, button or link. Apart from the USDA seal in the slider, the words organic and fair trade first come up in your Coffee for Everyone paragraph, about three phone screens down.

  • On a phone, the first price comes after the first screen

The first price and the first shop now button sit just below the first phone screen. Prices read 17.95, without a dollar sign or the bag size, and all three Best Sellers carry a featured tag.

  • This fall's news isn't on the page

Bryan Bautista's three new All-Star lots, your 15 subscriptions and both gift certificates aren't on the homepage itself, only in the shop. The merch has no place on the homepage either.

What all three keep: your logo, your Barlow Condensed and Fira Code type, your red, black and white, your halftone dots, your header and footer with the POW! van, and your prices, product pages, subscriptions and checkout. Each one uses sections your theme already has, on your WordPress and WooCommerce site. What changes is what leads, and your Brew Crew sign-up sits in the page instead of popping up.

POW! Coffee Now

A homepage that sounds like your bags look. Your POW! COFFEE NOW! mural fills the first screen with “Coffee for everyone.” set giant on it and two buttons, then all nine coffees appear as numbered comic panels with your notes and prices, the merch gets a loud red spread, and gifts and the Brew Crew follow in the same voice.

  1. Your own mural, edge to edge, with words and two buttons. Today the first screen is a three-photo slider with no headline or button. In A your POW! COFFEE NOW! mural fills the screen, “Coffee for everyone.” (your heading) sits on it at 156 px, then your line “Coffee is what we do, but you are why we do it.” and two buttons, shop coffee and shop merch. A black strip along the bottom gives $17.95 for a 16 oz bag, $19.95 for All-Star microlots, the 5 lb bulk bag and “usually ships within 48 hours”, on a computer and on a phone, before any scrolling.
  2. The whole lineup as comic panels, with prices. “The lineup.” at 230 px, then nine coffees numbered #01 to #09 in red, black and white panels on your star yellow: Cherry Bomb Espresso as the big panel with your own line “a nuanced explosion of flavor in every shot” in a speech bubble, then Dynamite Espresso, Suplicar Clemencia, Honduras Marcala Dark, Mexico Chiapas Altura, Daymaker, Cold Brew, Decaf Dynamite Espresso and the Single Serving Cups, each with roast, your tasting notes, the dollar price and shop now.
  3. Organic since day one, said big. A black halftone band with “2008” at 300 px, your line “certified Fair Trade and Organic since day one, all the way back in 2008”, the roaster drum and espresso photos as tilted panels, and Andy and Patrick in your own About page words.
  4. Merch gets a full spread. The Stripe Pull-Over Hoodie fills half the screen, edge to edge, beside “Wear it loud.” at 200 px and six pieces with prices: Stripe T-Shirt, Retro Tee, Logo T-Shirt and Logo Beanie at $24.95, the 16oz Tumbler at $32.95 and the 7" Airscape at $37.95.
  5. Gifts and the Brew Crew in the page. The E-Gift Certificate with $10, $25, $50 and $100 as four big comic blocks, then your Brew Crew form (First, Last, Email, CAPTCHA, Count me in!) in a giant speech bubble above the footer, in place of the pop up that covers the phone screen after a second and a half.

How we'd build it

platformYour WordPress and WooCommerce site and its theme: the slider down to one full-width image with a text layer, text blocks for the panels, merch and gifts, product cards linked to your live product pages, a small stylesheet for the comic type and halftone, and your Brew Crew form. No new plugins.

timeAbout 7 hours 30 minutes of the 8 Try a Day hours. Prices are typed into the page; we check every one against your shop that morning.

The All-Star Almanac

Your newest news is Bryan Bautista’s three All-Star lots. B opens on your coffee cherries with your own “All-Star (noun)” definition set giant, gives Natural, Honey and Washed each a color block from its own label, then Bryan’s farm, the roster, what is on the shelf now and your origin trips as a photo journal.

  1. Your coffee cherries, edge to edge, with your own definition on them. The first screen is your cherries photo full width with “All-Star” at 270 px and your line “An organic coffee producer that through their dedication, quality, and talent produce amazing microlots that blow us away.”, two buttons (shop Bryan’s three lots, meet the All-Stars) and a strip naming the three new lots with their notes and $19.95, on a computer and on a phone.
  2. Bryan’s three new lots, as big as the bags deserve. Natural, Honey and Washed each get a full color block in the color of its own label (red, honey yellow, blue), the process name at 150 px, the bag photo large, your tasting notes, a line from each product page and $19.95 for a 16 oz bag. Today these three are new in your shop and not on the homepage.
  3. Bryan, in his own farm photos. His portrait and three of his farm photos (the coffee flower, the misty rows, the cherries in hand) fill half the screen beside your card line “Third-generation farmer, master of processing, and the guy who bought a kids’ soccer team.” and four big numbers from your pages: more than 50 years on the same ground, 3 years selling to you directly, 1600 m, Bourbon.
  4. The roster and what is on the shelf now. “The roster.” at 200 px with your All-Stars paragraph, Oscar, Melvin, Pedro and Hubert at full column height with their card lines, your All-Star Series header band, then Finca Cual Bicicleta (Oscar’s bicycle line, $19.95) and Autumn Seasonal (Lennon, “for the 5th year in a row”, $17.95) as two full-width color spreads.
  5. Origin trips as a photo journal, then the Brew Crew in the page. Your line “Every year, Dynamite takes multiple trips to origin countries.” at 120 px over a seven-photo journal from your About and All Stars pages, four big numbers (14 years, 6 All-Stars, 5th year, 2008), then your Brew Crew form on deep green above the footer, where your “behind-the-bean stories” line fits best.

How we'd build it

platformYour WordPress and WooCommerce site and its theme: one full-width image with a text layer, three color text blocks for the lots, image grids, half-width image and text pairs, and your Brew Crew form. No new plugins.

timeAbout 7 hours 30 minutes of the 8 Try a Day hours. When Bryan’s lots sell out, the lots block switches to the next All-Star release by changing three photos, names and prices.

Liner Notes

Dynamite is two places people love: the Black Mountain coffee bar and the solar-powered Swannanoa roastery. C treats the homepage as a record sleeve, Side A the coffee bar (“our accidental cafe”), Side B the roastery, with your coffees as a tracklist, subscriptions on repeat, the Golden Ratio as a bonus track and the wholesale door before the footer.

  1. The coffee bar, edge to edge, with the hours under it. Your photo of the Black Mountain coffee bar fills the screen with “Our accidental cafe.” at 184 px (your own words), your “where it all began” paragraph and two buttons, get directions and shop coffee. A strip along the bottom gives 7 AM to 6 PM every day, 3198 US Hwy 70, 828.357.8555 and the Swannanoa roastery address. Today the hours and address sit in the middle of the page and in the footer.
  2. Your rumpus room line, at poster size. “We’re more rumpus room than office around here, complete with a kicking record collection.” at 118 px, then the record room and the La Marzocco photos edge to edge, the latte with your “Roasted with love in Black Mountain” sticker, your neighbors line and the Coffee Bar gift certificate ($10 to $100) on a red block.
  3. The coffees as a tracklist. “The tracklist.” at 200 px with a record in your badge, then Side A and Side B: Ethiopia Sidamo, Colombia Montaña Negra, WNCW 88.7 FM Mountain Morning, Sumatra Mandheling and Unleaded Decaf, each with roast, your notes and $17.95, five bags as album covers edge to edge, and your WNCW line “Just like our favorite Public Radio station, we can’t get enough.”
  4. The roastery, in your own numbers. Side B opens on your roastery photo beside “156” at 340 px and your Solar-Powered Coffee paragraph, then the solar panels band with “15×” and “the energy it consumes”, and the electric van and Byblocks bag recycling as two full-height photos with your words.
  5. Repeat buyers, home brewers, businesses and the Brew Crew. “On repeat.” with the four seasonal bags, $16.15 a month and your seasons line; “1:16” at 320 px over your pour over header with your Golden Ratio line and Patrick’s flash brew recipe (3 min, 60g, 360g, 780g); Wholesale & private label with your own lines and 828.581.0096; then your Brew Crew form in the page instead of the pop up.

How we'd build it

platformYour WordPress and WooCommerce site and its theme: one full-width image with a text layer, text blocks and half-width image pairs, full-width image bands, a row of product images and your Brew Crew form. The record is drawn with a few lines of CSS around your round badge. No new plugins.

Small things we noticed

Worth a look, whichever version you choose

These are on your live site today, checked again on November 2. Nothing has been changed; they are yours to decide.

  1. Your All Stars page says “We've been working with Oscar for 14 years”, and the Finca Cual Bicicleta page says 15 years. You'll know which is current; it may be worth matching them.
  2. The Ethiopia Sidamo Subscription photo shows a bag labeled Lemon, Shortbread, Floral, and its photo description says the same, while the coffee on that page lists Wildberry, Vanilla, Sweet.
  3. On the Autumn Seasonal page, the line “We've Lennon for many years” looks like it is missing a word.
  4. On your About page, “not only in the tquality and yield of the coffee crop” has an extra letter.
  5. Your three Bryan Bautista pages give the altitude as 1600 msal, where your other microlots write masl.
  6. Your wholesale page says your beans are roasted fresh in Black Mountain, NC, and your About page says the roastery has been in Swannanoa since 2021. You'll know which way you'd like to say it.
How it works

your three options

how it works

Pick A, B or C and we build it for you the same day or the next day.

It's a Try a Day: 8 hours of work for $480, credited toward Start Right Care.

Start Right Care, if you'd like ongoing help: $2,880 a quarter for 16 hours a month across your website, store, marketing, packaging and video.

  • We build your new homepage as a private page on your theme's home template. Your live homepage stays exactly as it is until you say OK, and switching back takes one click.
  • All we need is an admin account for us on your WordPress site (Users, Add New, role Administrator). The same day or next day clock starts when that account is set up. If someone else looks after your site, we're happy to work alongside them.
  • One quick answer, depending on the option. A and B need nothing; we check prices that morning. For C: is it OK to use Patrick's flash brew post from your Instagram feed, or would you send the original photo?
  • Your prices, product pages, subscriptions and checkout stay as they are, and no plugins are added. We only add a tag where a new link needs one, and keep the pop up off the homepage. You get before and after screenshots on phone and computer when it's done.
Reply with A, B or C, or tell me the parts you like from each and I'll combine them.
