A friend comes home. We drive up.
Nick and Will go back to high school. When Nick came home from Korea, Will filmed the day: a hot chicken lunch, the drive up the mountain to Craggy, a cold wind at the top and a sunset with friends. Shot and cut by Will into a film of 10 minutes 35 seconds.
- 10:35running time, published on YouTube December 7, 2018
- 284shots, counted by scene detection on the film file
- 0.2sthe median shot, pulled down by the opening burst; after it the median is 1.6 seconds
- 159shots in the first 36 seconds, a fast season opener before the day begins
01 · The span
Home, then up the mountain.
The day climbs. It starts on a quiet street when Nick walks up, moves to lunch, then up the road to the ridge, and ends in the blue after sunset. Nine frames in film order, grouped by where the day was, with the film timecode under each.

02 · The welcome
Back from Korea. Back in the truck.
The film opens the door for Nick and gets him straight into the passenger seat. The camera stays close, handheld, like a third friend along for the ride.

Frames at 1:32 and 2:08.
03 · The climb
Rock, road and a tunnel.
Up on the parkway the frame opens out. Wide lenses take in rock faces, overlooks and a tunnel cut through the mountain, and the blue of the sky starts to take over the picture.

The moving frame at the top of the page is the tunnel, at 5:08. It plays without sound; the film itself is below.
04 · Last light
The sun goes down over the ridges.
The film saves its warmest light for the end: the sun sinking into the ranges, everyone gathered on the rocks to watch it go.

05 · The cut
284 shots. Half of them in the first minute.
Every bar below is one shot, as wide as it runs on screen. The left edge is a blur of slivers: the season opener flashes through 159 shots in 36 seconds. Then the film settles into the day and lets the long takes on the mountain run.
Counted with scene detection (ffmpeg, a cut wherever the scene score is over 0.35) on the film file: 284 shots, median 0.2 seconds. Will’s own shot sheets for the film, which merge the shortest flashes, list 215.
