The QR That Was Never a QR
An AI tool drew something that looked exactly like a QR code. No phone could read it.
Start Right client work for the Center for Conscious Biology, Joda Williams. The flyer, its wording and its artwork are hers. Start Right rebuilt the code panel and prepared the print file.
The project
What the work needed to do.
The communication problem
An open house flyer was ready to print. In the bottom corner sat a QR code with three finder squares, a quiet zone and a field of little black modules, drawn by the same AI image tool that made the rest of the flyer. It looked completely correct. It was decoration. The modules were noise, and no phone could read it. Nothing about the file announces this; you only find out when you point a camera at it, or when a hundred printed flyers are already sitting in a room.
The design approach
Check it rather than trust it, then rebuild the one panel instead of the flyer. A decoder run against the original file returned no code at all, which is the finding the whole job turns on. A real code was generated for the page the flyer points at, at error correction Q so it still reads with about a quarter of it damaged, and sized so its modules stay large: version 4 at 33 by 33, chosen over the denser version 5 that a higher correction level would have forced. The flyer was enlarged four times for print, then only the area inside the gold frame line was replaced, with the cream fill and paper grain matched and feathered so there is no seam. The mat, the frame and every word of her copy are untouched.
The work
A print master at 4096 by 6144, a PDF, a preview, the code on its own, and a decode check on every file that leaves the folder.
- The original file decoded to nothing. That is the whole case: it looked right and did not work.
- The replacement decodes to the intended address in all seven delivered files, checked one by one.
- Error correction Q at version 4, 33 by 33 modules, so the code stays readable at the size the panel allows.
- The quiet zone runs 4.8 modules at its tightest, above the 4 module standard.
- Only the pixels inside the gold frame changed. A diff against the enlargement confirms nothing outside that box moved.
- Her wording was left exactly as it was, including the punctuation we would not have chosen.
- The destination page was fetched before delivery and returned 200 with the expected title, because a perfect code pointing at a dead page is the same failure one step later.
- A second pass shrank the final file with six different tools at five widths. Below 600 pixels wide the code stops being reliable, so the delivery carries a rule: 600 pixels minimum on screen, and the print file is unaffected.
- Six minutes seventeen seconds from the original file to the checked print master.
