Shope Creek Wilderness

The Hollow Bone Initiative

His words, given room to breathe.

At 11:40 on a Sunday morning he emailed the words for a new page. The first build set them plainly, and plain was not enough for words like these. The page was rebuilt as a walk through the land, and it was live by 1:22 that afternoon.

The Hollow Bone Initiative page opening on a computer: a misty forest with the title set large
The same opening on a phone
  • 844words from his email, set exactly as he wrote them
  • 7chapters on one gold line that runs the length of the page
  • 1:22PMthe rebuilt page live, the same day as his 11:40 AM email
  • 1new section on his home page, placed in the order he asked for

The first version, and the second

Same words. A different walk.

The first build was correct and plain: a title and a column of text. It did not do the words justice, so it was rebuilt within the hour. The second keeps every word in the same order and gives each part its own place to stand.

First buildLive about 1:10 PM
The first build: a title and one long column of text
RebuiltLive 1:22 PM, same words
The live page: seven chapters with forest bands, a dark question band and a sunrise close

Both pages at one scale, computer width. Children’s faces blurred on purpose.

The design

A hollow bone is a channel. So the page is one.

  1. The openingFull screenA misty forest with the title set large, so the page starts on the land.
  2. The channelSeven chaptersOne thin gold line runs through every chapter, with light moving down it as you read.
  3. The landImage bandsHis sentences set one to a line over his own photographs of the mountains.
  4. The closeSunrise, then giveA sunrise band, then the donation form beside his words about giving.
Chapter two: his lines set one per line over a misty mountain valley

His lines, one to a line, over the land.

Chapter four: his two questions set large on a dark band

His two questions, set large on a dark band.

“Wow, Will that is beautiful …. Magnificent job.”
