Will and his brother Jacob talking on the brick front steps of a house with a purple door

Film · Eighteen · 2019

My brother turns eighteen.

On Jacob’s eighteenth birthday Will picks up a new lens and films the day: the drive over, a game console in red and blue, a few rounds Jacob wins easily, cake, and a talk on the front steps about what matters. Shot and cut by Will into 5 minutes 51 seconds.

01 · The span

The drive, the gift, the talk.

A short film in three moves. Grey winter morning, a red box and two controllers, then the brothers sitting down to talk. Nine frames in film order, with the film timecode under each.

02 · The gift

Red and blue, shot close.

The camera treats the present like a product film: shallow focus, macro close ups, the red and blue of the controllers filling the frame. It is a little joke and a lot of care.

Frames at 2:01 and 4:10.

03 · Game on

Jacob wins. Easily.

Will takes the loss on camera and blames a technical error. The living room is wide and bright, and the cut stays loose so the laughing gets to happen.

04 · The advice

Focus on the people who matter.

On the front steps and then by the car, Will gives his brother the advice he would give his own eighteen year old self: keep the few people who care about you close, and do not live by everyone else’s opinion.

05 · The cut

79 shots in under six minutes.

Every bar below is one shot, as wide as it runs on screen. The run of short bars is the gift, cut fast; the wide bars near the end are the brothers talking, left alone.

Each bar is one shot, in film order

Counted with scene detection (ffmpeg, a cut wherever the scene score is over 0.35) on the film file: 79 shots, median 2.0 seconds. Will’s own shot sheets for the film, which merge the shortest flashes, list 74.
