What the work needed to do.
The communication problem
A unit that films its own training ends up with a great deal of material and no film. The footage is real and unrepeatable, shot by the people doing the work, but it arrives as coverage rather than as a story, and nobody inside the unit has the time to sit with it.
The design approach
The unit shot it and Will cut it. The work was assembly rather than authorship: finding the shape inside somebody else’s footage, holding the pace of a training exercise, and getting to a finished two minute forty one second film that the unit could use.
