The film, cut down
The farm, in six, fifteen or thirty seconds.
01 · The land
Start with the whole farm.
Before anyone speaks, the camera goes up. Fields, tree lines, the road and the rows set the place the rest of the film stands in.

02 · The rows
Rows you could count from the air.
Straight down, a planted field turns into a drawing: curves of soil, lines of young plants, the tracks between them.

03 · The farmer
He walks the rows. He tells it himself.
Patrick carries the film in his own words, out in the field and beside the hoop house, with the work going on around him. The family who work the land with him tell it too, standing in the work.

Moving frames play without sound. The film itself is below.
04 · The machines
Iron, rubber and red paint.
Between the words, the film looks closely at the tools a farm runs on: the old tractor, the discs, the hose on its reel.

05 · The cut
105 shots, held long.
Every bar below is one shot, as wide as it runs on screen. Most of them are held, the way you would stand and look at a field.
Counted with scene detection (ffmpeg, scene score over 0.35) on the film file. Will’s own shot sheets for the film also list 105.
06 · Two films
One visit. Two films.
The same visit to the farm also made a 3:32 fundraising short, built to be sent: named cast, a named location and a clear purpose, made in association with Pisgah Peaks Ventures. The documentary is the long version, made to simply show what is there.
